This cushion is inspired by the song-hunting quest of Cecil J Sharp in Somerset, in 1903. We’ve used a beautiful C19th linen for the cushion’s construction, and its colour - tobacco - was achieved naturally, using dye vats of walnut and silver birch.
The images, summoned from three of Somerset’s oldest and most beloved folk ballads, are block-printed by us, by hand, in our rural workshop. The linseed pigment, mixed by eye, is a vivid blue. The images sit on raised and recessed patches - peasant-inspired - and all stitchery is done by hand.
The back of the cushion features original 1800s raised, embroidered initials - IC - in a foliate style. Alongside this lovely detail sits our block-printed, patched emblem - an earthbound & celestial plough. With its envelope-style opening, the cushion’s deluxe, feather-filled pad is removable. Hand-wash gently in lukewarm water.
