Fusing the hedgerow & the heavens, this ‘Culpeper cushion’ - informed by the C17th astrological herbalist and firebrand, Nicholas Culpeper - is constructed from 1800s linen. Appropriately, it is plant-dyed using indigo. We wanted to mimic the deep, heavenly blue of the famous vaulted ceiling in the Cappella degli Scrovegni, painted by Giotto in around 1305, and the colour is accurate.
The block prints - depicting plants and their ruling planets and celestial body, plus ribbons carrying the names - are in linseed-based Old gold. They provide a striking contrast to the lapis lazuli linen ground.
The back of the cushion is emblazoned with our block-printed emblem, again in Old gold, on a raised patch. It shows an earthbound & celestial plough. The cushion has an envelope-style opening, allowing the deluxe, feather-filled pad to be removed. Hand-wash gently in lukewarm water.
