Our ladies’ ‘Culpeper Coat’ celebrates the empowering work of the C17th astrological herbalist, Nicholas Culpeper. Its cotton lining is adorned with block prints of medicinal plants, all championed by the dissident herbalist. Our decision to use plants goes beyond mere ornamentation. It’s their position within the coat that’s at the heart of the creative idea. Each plant is patched into the garment in a specific place, corresponding to the area of the body - organ or muscle - it is used to treat.*

The coat is made from a beautiful, medium weight Irish linen (woven for us in Wexford), and is available to order in Sizes UK 10 (US 6), UK 12 (US 8), UK 14 (US 10), UK 16 (US 12), UK 18 (US 14) & UK 20 (US 16).

It comes in three distinctive colours: Vert, Ecru and Black. Vert (an exquisite bottle green) is a plain weave linen, slightly lighter weight at 255g/m2, with a soft laundered finish. Ecru and Black are a herringbone linen, slightly heavier weight at 270g/m2, also with a soft laundered finish.

Being a fitted garment, the coat has a striking silhouette and brims with historically-informed details; to give a swagger and a smile! These include a triple-pleated skirt with hidden hip pockets; inset, gathered sleeve heads; shaped sleeves, pleated at the elbow; a timeless, feminine collar and lapel; a Japanese silk grosgrain ribbon waist tie and lapel decoration; an angled breast pocket and, lastly, antique, mismatched mother of pearl buttons.

Culpeper believed that if medicinal plants were to be effective, they had to be collected (or sown) at specific times; these times were dictated by the position of the planets and celestial bodies. Consequently, each block print shows a plant contained within a circle - suggestive of its governing planet or celestial body - underscored with a ribbon containing the name of the plant and associated planet, etc.

In the mid 1600s - Culpeper’s time - the sun and moon were known about. However, only five of our seven planets (not including Earth) had been discovered: Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Consequently, the coat’s lining has a total of 7 block prints of medicinal plants, each with a different governing planet, the sun and the moon.

We have mirrored this number in the amount of buttons on the coat; 3 at the front and 2 on each cuff. As a nod to the undiscovered planets - Uranus and Neptune - and our own Earth, there are three spare buttons, sewn inconspicuously onto the lining.

As with all our garments, the ‘Culpeper’ is entirely handmade in rural England - lead time is approximately 6 weeks. Please note that we do accept payment in up to three instalments at no extra charge.
